Character AI's rules are short on this point: its community guidelines say pornographic content and nudity are prohibited.^[1] There is no adult mode, and paying for a subscription buys speed and extras, not fewer limits.

The direction of travel is toward more caution, not less. In October 2025 the company announced that under-18 users would lose open-ended chat by late November 2025, backed by age assurance that combines its own model with the verification provider Persona.^[2] That is a sensible choice for a platform with a young audience. It also means the filter is part of the product, not a bug waiting to be fixed.

CrushOn advertises no-filter NSFW chat and asks users to be 18 or over.^[11] Its pricing page is unusually specific about limits, which makes it easy to know what you are getting.^[12] The free plan includes 100 message credits a month, unlimited use of its free models, 8K memory and up to 200 stored messages per character, and free chat history is deleted after 7 days without activity.

Paid plans step up from 2,000 to 125,000 credits a month with 16K to 24K memory models, and an optional add-on unlocks unlimited use of its pro models. One thing to read before relying on it: CrushOn's terms also restrict posting NSFW material in what users submit, which sits awkwardly with the marketing, so check the current terms yourself.

SillyTavern is not a service, it is software. You install it on your own computer, connect it to a language model of your choice, and load or write characters.^[13] Because there is no company in the middle, there is no filter of its own; what you can do depends entirely on the model you connect and that provider's rules. Two things to know before you switch. Kindroid retired its permanent free plan on October 1, 2026; new users now get a limited preview and a short trial, then a subscription or a read-only account.^[16] And while the app is 18+ only, it does not spell out what is allowed in private chat on its own pages, so expectations are hard to set in advance.

Two names appear in almost every list like this one, so it is worth saying plainly where they stand. Chai's terms ban sexually explicit images and video, and its safety page says its models refuse sexually explicit content, even though it allows mature themes in fiction.^[19] PolyBuzz is 18+ and offers a large character catalog, but its terms prohibit content that depicts pornography or sexual acts.^[20]

Both can be fun for roleplay. Neither is the answer if the filter is why you left Character AI.
